Bryant University is a 4-year university located in Smithfield, which is a town in Providence County, Rhode Island, USA, with a population estimated at a number of more than 20 000 inhabitants (2000). Smithfield was first settled in the 1600’s, first starting as a farming community, being named after Smithfield, London.
Bryant University was founded in 1863, as a branch of Bryant and Stratton, being sold and merged with Rhode Island Commercial School, in 1916. The original location of the university was in Providence, RI, but it was moved to its present location, in Smithfield, when Earl Silas Tupper, founder of Tupperware and Bryant University alumnus, donated the current campus of 420 acres to the university.
Until August 2004, the university was known as Bryant College, changing its name to Bryant University, becoming more selective then ever before, in its history. Bryant is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and the AACSB International, and consists of 2 colleges: the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Business, with most of the students enrolled in a business discipline.
The athletic teams from Bryant University are known as the Bryant Bulldogs, the university having 22 intercollegiate varsity athletic teams, who participate in the NCAA Division I, as members of the Northeast Conference. The Bulldogs are best known for their achievements in basketball and football, in which they’ve experienced most of their victories, in the past years.
